Volunteer Appreciation Week - April 18 - 24, 2010

Organizations across Canada are taking a moment this week to thank the volunteers that help make their work possible and our communities better.

"Canada is a compassionate nation.  There are 12.5 million Canadians volunteering in some form in this country", says Ruth MacKenzie, President and CEO of Volunteer Canada.   "The work of volunteering is essential to our communities as well as to our social fabric..."   Canada boasts over 161,000 registered charitable organizations within which volunteers play a key role.   According to the 2007 Canadian Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participating, the largest survey ever completed that examines how Canadians support each other and their communities, volunteers contribute two billion hours each year, the equivalent of one million full-time jobs.

The CAS of Brant is so proud of the accomplishments and contributions made by our volunteers as an enhancement and support to agency services.   Volunteers are involved in roles as Tutors, Special Friends, Volunteer Drivers, and are directly connected to community After School and Homework Help programs, Teen Parenting Group, Breakfast programs and assist with special events and projects such as bicycle rodeos, Christmas donations and the Santa Shop, Home Depot Days, gift wrapping at Christmas, Foster Parent Picnic (providing crafts for the children in attendance), assisting with activities at "George", etc. etc.

We have a strong relationship with Laurier Brant, Mohawk College and Nipissing University, one that provides an opportunity for students to gain practical experience, reinforcing the academic portion of their studies.  Their involvement provides many of our agency programs with the "extra pairs of ears, eyes and hands" assisting our staff to  offer programs for our children, youth & families.

Many of you, our staff, are volunteers in your own community as well.   Perhaps you coach a soccer or basketball team, volunteer as a Big Brother/Sister, are involved in community services group activities, or volunteer to participate in events that raise funds that organizations are so desperate for.  Thank you for sharing of your time and talents to make a difference in the lives of others.

Please take time to say THANK YOU to volunteers in our community, whose efforts and hard work help shape our country 365 days a year.

Debra Ward
Coordinator of Volunteer Services
